Analogical processes in children's understanding of spatial representations.

چکیده
We propose that map reading can be construed as a form of analogical mapping. We tested 2 predictions that follow from this claim: First, young children's patterns of performance in map reading tasks should parallel those found in analogical mapping tasks; and, second, children will benefit from guided alignment instructions that help them see the relational correspondences between the map and the space. In 4 experiments, 3-year-olds completed a map reading task in which they were asked to find hidden objects in a miniature room, using a corresponding map. We manipulated the availability of guided alignment (showing children the analogical mapping between maps and spaces; Experiments 1, 2, and 3a), the format of guided alignment (gesture or relational language; Experiment 2), and the iconicity of maps (Experiments 3a and 3b). We found that (a) young children's difficulties in map reading follow from known patterns of analogical development-for example, focusing on object similarity over relational similarity; and (b) guided alignment based on analogical reasoning led to substantially better performance. Results also indicated that children's map reading performance was affected by the format of guided alignment, the iconicity of the maps, and the order of tasks. The results bear on the developmental mechanisms underlying young children's learning of spatial representations and also suggest ways to support this learning. (PsycINFO Database Record

Using Quantitative Information to Improve Analogical Matching Between Sketches
Qualitative representations are suitable for sketch understanding systems because they highlight important relationships while leaving out details that are not essential for conceptual understanding. These representations can be used to perform spatial analogies between sketches, which determine qualitative similarities and differences. However, there are cases where including quantitative info...
متن کاملUsing Qualitative Representations and Analogical Mapping to Solve Problems from a Spatial Intelligence Test
We show how qualitative spatial representations can be used with the Structure-Mapping Engine (SME), a domain-general model of analogy, to solve a set of problems from the Raven’s Progressive Matrices test. SME is used in a two-stage mapping process which we have previously shown to be effective for solving geometric analogy problems. Each problem is drawn in PowerPoint and input into sKEA, our...
متن کاملTitle Young children's analogical reasoning across cultures: Similarities and differences
A cross-cultural comparison between U.S. and Hong Kong preschoolers examined factors responsible for young children's analogical reasoning errors. On a scene analogy task, both groups had adequate prerequisite knowledge of the key relations, were the same age, and showed similar baseline performance, yet Chinese children outperformed U.S. children on more relationally complex problems. Children...
متن کاملQualitative Spatial Reasoning for Geometric Analogies
In this paper we provide evidence supporting the hypothesis that qualitative spatial reasoning and representations provide a bridge between the perceptual and the conceptual. We demonstrate that qualitative visual structure combined with analogical processing can produce human-like results on a classic geometric analogies task. Importantly, the bulk of the computations are not particular to the...
متن کاملAnalogy as a mechanism of comparison
When we think of analogies, we often imagine cases where drawing on complex concepts from one domain helps to extend our comprehension of concepts from a different domain. As such, the use of analogies is often associated with creativity and problem-solving. However, there is evidence that the inferences derived through processes of analogical thinking are applicable in other contexts that migh...
